Introduction
This article unveils a rare manuscript by the late Moroccan historian Taher El Lhioui, documenting the biography and martyrdom of the resistance leader Abdeslam Al-Harish from the Beni Arous tribe during the colonial era around 1925.
The Betrayal of 1925

Title:
From the Documents of Historian Taher El Lhioui: The Martyr of Beni Arous, Hero Abdeslam Al-Harish, and the Betrayal of 1926
The "Memoria del Historiador Taher El Lhioui" blog continues to unearth rare manuscripts and documents recording the epic of resistance in Northern Morocco (the Jbala and Rif regions). Today, we publish a historical document handwritten by the late historian Taher El Lhioui (1917-2013), reviewing the inspiring and poignant biography of one of the heroes of the Beni Arous tribe: the martyr Mr. Abdeslam bin Mohamed Al-Harish, who wrote with his blood a golden page of resilience against colonial occupation in the 1920s.
The manuscript notes that Hero Abdeslam Al-Harish (from the Awlad Al-Harish family in the village of Al-Harish, Beni Arous) possessed formidable strength and innate leadership qualities since his youth. He was renowned among his tribesmen and adversaries alike for his supreme mastery of combat arts.
The freedom fighter Al-Harish led fierce confrontations and direct clashes against colonial forces, particularly in the "Al-Ahmarsh" areas. Moving with great audacity, he frequently approached colonial military bases in a location known as "Aknib Al-Jutut," forcing the colonial authorities to reckon with him as one of the most prominent field resistance leaders in the region.
According to the historical investigation of Taher El Lhioui, after failing to defeat the hero on the battlefield, the colonial authorities attempted to initiate a policy of truce and rapprochement with him around 1926. Despite his extreme caution, colonial forces exploited a warm family and social occasion—the celebration of the birth of the hero’s newborn child (the traditional 7th-day ceremony).
The colonel and the military command orchestrated a treacherous trap. When the hero was summoned or approached during this gathering, a brutal military betrayal was executed, resulting in the martyrdom of both the hero and his father. This marked the tragic end of a life dedicated to jihad and defending the homeland in the territory of Beni Arouss
