The Virtues and Lineage of Fatima Az-Zahrae and the Prophetic Household:

Introduction:

The following text offers a precise academic English translation of a specialized historical and genealogical Moroccan treatise. This section covers pages 37 to 43 of the original work, meticulously documenting the prophetic traditions (Hadiths) and historical accounts regarding the virtues of Fatima Az-Zahrae, her sons Al-Hasan and Al-Husayn, and the detailed lineage and households of Imam Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with them all)

**Virtues of Fatima Az-Zahrae, may Allah be pleased with her**

* Al-Hakim narrated on the authority of Ibn Zubayr that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Fatima is a part of me; whatever hurts her hurts me, and whatever distresses her distresses me." (Also narrated by Ahmad and At-Tirmidhi).

* The Two Sheikhs (Al-Bukhari and Muslim) narrated on the authority of Fatima (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to her: "O Fatima, are you not pleased to be the sovereign lady of the women of the believers?"

* At-Tirmidhi and Al-Hakim narrated on the authority of Usama bin Zayd that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Fatima is the most beloved of my family to me, and you (Usama) are the most beloved of men to me after her."

* The Two Sheikhs, Imam Ahmad, Abu Dawud, and At-Tirmidhi narrated on the authority of Al-Miswar bin Makhrama that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "The sons of Hisham bin Al-Mughira have sought my permission to marry their daughter to Ali bin Abi Talib, but I do not permit them, then I do not permit them, then I do not permit them—unless Ali bin Abi Talib wishes to divorce my daughter and marry their daughter. For Fatima is a part of me; what doubts her doubts me, and what hurts her hurts me."

* In another narration, he said: "Except that a daughter of the Messenger of Allah and a daughter of the enemy of Allah can never be joined together under one man." It also contains: "Ali bin Abi Talib proposed to the daughter of Abu Jahl. When Fatima heard of this, she came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and said: 'Your people claim that you do not get angry for your daughters, and behold, Ali is going to marry the daughter of Abu Jahl.' Thereupon, the Messenger of Allah stood up, and I heard him say after the Tashahhud: 'Amma Ba'du (To proceed); I married [my daughter] to Abu al-Aas bin al-Rabi', and when he spoke to me, he spoke the truth, and when he promised me, he fulfilled his promise. Verily, Fatima is a part of me, and I hate that she be troubled. By Allah, the daughter of the Messenger of Allah and the daughter of the enemy of Allah shall never be gathered under [one man]...

..the enemy of Allah under one man." It also contains on the authority of Al-Hakam bin Abi Aqeel who said: Ali narrated to us that Fatima (peace be upon her) complained about what she suffered from the hand-mill. News reached her that some captives had been brought to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), so she went to request a servant but did not find him. She mentioned this to Aisha, and when the Prophet came, Aisha informed him. Ali added: "The Prophet came to us while we had gone to our beds. We attempted to stand up, but he said: 'Stay in your places.' He then sat between us until I felt the coldness of his feet on my chest. He said: 'Shall I not direct you to something better than what you have requested? When you go to your beds, say 'Allahu Akbar' (Allah is the Greatest) thirty-four times, 'Subhan Allah' (Glory be to Allah) thirty-three times, and 'Alhamdulillah' (Praise be to Allah) thirty-three times. This is better for you than a servant.'"

* Al-Mulla narrated in his Seerah that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) sent Abu Dharr to Ali and Fatima (may Allah be pleased with them). Abu Dharr found Fatima grinding at the mill with her own hands, and there was no one with her. He informed the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) of this, and the Prophet said: "O Abu Dharr, did you not know that Allah has angels traveling across the earth who have been tasked with assisting the family of Muhammad?"

* Among her virtues is what was reported in Sahih al-Bukhari (may Allah be pleased with him): "Fatima is the sovereign lady of the women of Paradise." On the authority of Al-Miswar bin Makhrama (may Allah be pleased with him), the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Fatima is a part of me; whoever angers her angers me."

**The First Household of Ali, may Allah be pleased with him**

This household consists of him and his first wife, **Fatima Az-Zahrae**, the daughter of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), the sovereign lady of the women of the believers in this world, and the sovereign lady of the women of Paradise. He had four children from her:

1. **Imam Al-Hasan**, may Allah be pleased with him. His birth was in the third year of the Hijrah, one year after their marriage, according to the most reliable opinion.

2. **Imam Al-Husayn**, may Allah be pleased with him. His birth was in the fourth year of the Hijrah. Between him and his brother Al-Hasan, there were only six months. After the death of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), Imam Al-Hasan lived for forty years, while Imam Al-Husayn lived for seven years [Note: Translated exactly as written in the text]. These are the Household of the First House.

3. Zaynab Al-Kubra
4. Umm Kulthum Al-Kubra

**The Second Household of Ali, may Allah be pleased with him**

This second household consists of several wives, including the mothers of his children, and free women, who are:
(2) Umm al-Banin bint Haram Al-Amiriyyah from the tribe of Bani Kilab.
(3) Layla bint Mas'ud Al-Tamimiyyah.
(4) Asma bint Umays Al-Khath'amiyyah.
(5) Al-Sahba bint Rabi'ah from Bani Jusham bin Bakr.
(6) Umama bint Abi al-Aas from her mother Zaynab, the daughter of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him).
(7) Khawla bint Ja'far Al-Hanafiyyah.
(8) Umm Sa'id bint Urwah bin Mas'ud.
(9) Muhayah bint Imru' al-Qais Al-Kalbiyyah. It is not precisely known how many wives he married, may Allah be pleased with him, among these groups.

As for the total number of his children from other than Fatima Az-Zahrae, they are 27 between males and females. His lineage continued through five of them, including the two sons of Fatima Az-Zahrae, making a total of five: Al-Hasan, Al-Husayn, and from the other household, Muhammad bin Al-Hanafiyyah, Al-Abbas bin Umm al-Banin, and Umar bin Al-Sahba bint Rabi'ah.

The male children of the second house are: Al-Abbas, Al-Aon, Ja'far, Uthman, Abdullah, Abu Bakr, Muhammad Al-Awsat (the Middle), Yahya, Umar, and Muhammad Al-Asghar (the Younger).

The daughters of the second house (16) are: Zaynab Al-Sughra, Umm Al-Hasan, Ramlah Al-Kubra, Umm Kulthum Al-Sughra, Umm Hani, Maymunah, Ruqayyah Al-Sughra, Fatima, Umama, Khadijah, Umm Al-Kiram, Umm Salama, Umm Ja'far, Jumanah, and Nafisah.

The total number of children from the first and second households combined is 31 between males and females. The historians' primary focus on the household of Fatima Az-Zahrae stems from the high status of Al-Hasan and Al-Husayn with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), despite the struggles and afflictions they and their descendants faced throughout Islamic history across generations. This is a manifestation of the recommendations made by the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) regarding his Household, as explicitly stated in the Quran and the Sunnah, for human nature is subject to change and shift, except for that which is guided by Allah. "To Allah we belong, and to Him we shall return."

**The Upbringing of Al-Hasan and Al-Husayn by the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)**

The Two Sheikhs narrated on the authority of Al-Bara who said: I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) carrying Al-Hasan on his shoulder while saying: "O Allah, I love him, so love him."

Al-Bukhari narrated on the authority of Abu Bakrah who said: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) on the pulpit, with Al-Hasan by his side, looking at the people at times and at him at others, saying: "This son of mine is a Sayyid (leader), and perhaps Allah will bring peace through him between two major factions of Muslims."

* Al-Bukhari narrated on the authority of Ibn Umar who said: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "They (Al-Hasan and Al-Husayn) are my two sweet basils (Rayhanat) in this world."

* At-Tirmidhi and Al-Hakim narrated on the authority of Abu Sa'id Al-Khudri who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Al-Hasan and Al-Husayn are the leaders of the youths of the people of Paradise."

* At-Tirmidhi narrated on the authority of Usama bin Zayd who said: I saw the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) with Al-Hasan and Al-Husayn on his thighs, and he said: "These two are my sons and the sons of my daughter. O Allah, I love them, so love them, and love those who love them."

* Al-Hakim narrated on the authority of Ibn Abbas who said: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) approached carrying Al-Hasan on his shoulder. A man saw him and said: "What an excellent mount you are riding, O boy!" Thereupon, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) replied: "And what an excellent rider he is!"

* At-Tirmidhi narrated on the authority of Abd al-Rahman bin Al-Zubayr who said: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was making prostration (Sujood) when Al-Hasan or Al-Husayn came and climbed onto his back. He would then gently lower him when raising his head. I saw him doing this until he completed his prayer.

* Ibn Sa'd narrated on the authority of Abi Salama bin Abd al-Rahman who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to extend his tongue to Al-Hasan bin Ali, and when the boy saw the redness of his tongue, he would smile. Al-Aki bin Azher bin Al-Arqa Al-Lihyani said regarding his household: "Yes, Al-Hakim narrated on the authority of Zuhayr bin Al-Arqam who said: Al-Hasan bin Ali stood up to deliver a sermon and said: 'I am from the household whose love Allah has made mandatory upon every Muslim.'" Then he recited: {Whosoever earns a good deed, We shall increase for him good therein} [Surah Ash-Shura 42:23]—he said: "The earning of a good deed is the love of the Household of the Prophet."

* Abu Nu'aym narrated in Al-Hilyah on the authority of Abu Bakr who said: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was praying with us, and whenever he went into prostration, Al-Hasan—who was a small child—would come and sit on his back or neck. The Prophet would raise him gently. When they finished the prayer, the Companions said: "O Messenger of Allah, you treat this boy in a way you do not treat anyone else." He replied: "Verily, this is my sweet basil, and this son of mine is a leader; perhaps Allah Almighty will bring peace through him between two factions of Muslims.

* The Two Sheikhs narrated on the authority of Abu Hurayrah that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "O Allah, I love him, so love him, and love those who love him." Meaning Al-Hasan. In another narration: "O Allah, I love him, so love him, and love those who love him." Abu Hurayrah said: "No one was more beloved to me after that than Al-Hasan." It is also narrated by Al-Hafiz Al-Salafi that he said: "I saw Al-Hasan bin Ali entering the mosque, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was on the pulpit. He went down and took him by his hand until he sat him in his lap, then said: 'O Allah, I love him, so love him, and love those who love him, and may Allah curse those who harbor hatred towards him.'" Three times.

* Imam Ahmad narrated on the authority of Al-Hasan: "I was with the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) when a basket of dates was brought to him. I took one and put it in my mouth, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) looked at me, took it out, and threw it back into the basket, saying: 'We, the family of Muhammad, do not consume charity.'"

* At-Tirmidhi narrated it with words containing a deep lesson: "Beware, lest you be with those whom Allah has favored among the prophets, the steadfast affirmers of truth, the martyrs, and the righteous."

**The Reason Behind Naming Them Al-Hasan and Al-Husayn**

* Al-Baghawi and Abd al-Ghani narrated in Al-Istructural on the authority of Salman Al-Farsi (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Aaron named his two sons Shabbar and Shubayr, and I have named my two sons Al-Hasan and Al-Husayn with the names of Aaron's sons."

* Ibn Sa'd narrated on the authority of Imran bin Sulayman who said: "Al-Hasan and Al-Husayn are two names from among the names of the people of Paradise; the Arabs had never used them in the pre-Islamic era of ignorance (Jahiliyyah)."

* Imam Ahmad and At-Tirmidhi narrated on the authority of Abu Sa'id, and Al-Tabarani on the authority of Umar, and Ibn Mas'ud that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Al-Hasan and Al-Husayn are the leaders of the youths of the people of Paradise, and their father is better than them." Meaning himself, peace be upon him.

* Imam Ahmad, At-Tirmidhi, and An-Nasa'i narrated on the authority of Hudhayfah that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to him: "O Hudhayfah, did you see the angel that appeared to me tonight? He had never descended to the earth before this night. He sought permission from his Lord to greet me and give me glad tidings that Al-Hasan and Al-Husayn are the leaders..."

"...of the youths of the people of Paradise, and that Fatima is the sovereign lady of the women of Paradise."

* Al-Tabarani narrated on the authority of Fatima that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Al-Hasan and Al-Husayn are my two sweet basils from this world."

* At-Tirmidhi narrated on the authority of Ibn Umar that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Al-Hasan and Al-Husayn are my two sweet basils from this world."

* Ibn Adi and Ibn Asakir narrated on the authority of Abu Bakrah that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "These two sons of mine are my two sweet basils from this world; whoever loves them loves me, and whoever hates them hates me."

* At-Tirmidhi and Ibn Hibban narrated on the authority of Usama bin Zayd that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "These two are my sons and the sons of my daughter. O Allah, I love them, so love them, and love those who love them."

* Imam Ahmad and the authors of the Sunan (the four books of Sunan), Ibn Hibban, and Al-Hakim narrated on the authority of Buraydah that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was delivering a sermon to us when Al-Hasan and Al-Husayn came walking, wearing red shirts, stumbling and getting up. The Prophet descended from the pulpit, carried them, and placed them before him, then said: "Allah spoke the truth: {Your wealth and your children are only a trial}. I looked at these two boys walking and stumbling, and I could not patient myself until I interrupted my speech and raised them up."

* Al-Bukhari, Abu Ya'la, Ibn Hibban, and Al-Tabarani narrated on the authority of Sa'id bin Abi Rashid that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Al-Hasan and Al-Husayn are the leaders of the youths of the people of Paradise, except for the two maternal cousins, Jesus son of Mary and John son of Zachariah. And Fatima is the sovereign lady of the women of Paradise except for what was of Mary..."

* Al-Bukhari, Imam Ahmad, Abu Dawud, At-Tirmidhi, and An-Nasa'i narrated on the authority of Abu Bakrah that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "This son of mine is a leader, and perhaps Allah will bring peace through him between two major factions of Muslims." Meaning Al-Hasan.

* Al-Tabarani narrated on the authority of Uqbah bin Amir that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Al-Hasan and Al-Husayn are two pillars of the Throne, and they are not suspended."

* Al-Bukhari narrated in Al-Adab Al-Mufrad, At-Tirmidhi, and Ibn Majah on the authority of Ya'la bin Murrah that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Husayn is from me and I am from Husayn; may Allah love whoever loves Husayn. Husayn is a nation among nations (Sibt)."

* At-Tirmidhi narrated on the authority of Anas that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was asked: "Which of your household is most beloved to you?" He replied: "Al-Hasan and Al-Husayn."
