The Secrets of Jadhb (Spiritual Attraction) and the Breaking of Norms in the Mishishi Space: A Reading into Genealogists' Notes and Eyewitness Accounts

Introduction: Jabal al-Alam—The Fortress of Matter and the Lighthouse of the Spirit

Jabal al-Alam, located in the territory of the Bani Arus tribe, has never been merely a rugged geographical fortress whose terrain restricted historical movements and protected the lineages of the Shurafa Alamiyeen (the descendants of Moulay Abd al-Salam bin Mashish). Rather, across the centuries, it has served as an extended center of spiritual energy and a breeding ground for unique Sufi behavioral phenomena that have baffled minds and resisted superficial material interpretation. Within this space, deeply imbued with the light of the Mishishi spiritual pole, the phenomenon of Jadhb (divine attraction) emerges as one of the most precise social and metaphysical secrets that shaped the local consciousness, becoming an inseparable part of the region's cultural identity.

I. The Methodological Classification of Jadhb by the Historian Taher El Lhioui

In a step that reflects scholarly precision and a conscious observation of the region’s reality and spiritual structure, the genealogist and sub-editor, Taher El Lhioui, established a clear distinction for understanding this phenomenon. In his historical notes and writings, he categorized Jadhb into two primary types:

  1. Al-Majdhub al-Salik (The Intoxicated Wayfarer / Guided Attraction): This represents the state of an individual overtaken by divine providence through a sudden spiritual seizure that detaches their inner self from the material world. However, they do not collapse into perpetual oblivion; rather, divine care steers them toward a balanced path (Suluk). Consequently, they regain their conventional mind, harmonizing ultimate reality (Haqiqa) with sacred law (Sharia). Their outward conduct remains disciplined by jurisprudence, while their inward being is immersed in divine light. These individuals often transition to become spiritual guides and mentors.
  2. Al-Majdhub Ghayr al-Salik (The Unguided Intoxicated / The Absorbed): This is the category where the spiritual attraction completely overpowers the heart and mind. The individual falls into a permanent state of absence from conventional earthly awareness without ever returning to the station of discernment. Thus, they are legally and socially exempt from religious obligations. They utter cryptic, shocking expressions that defy ordinary logic, and this is the specific category surrounded by immense awe and caution.

II. The Tongue of Allusion and the Weapon of the Unseen: Readings from Reality

Daily interaction with the Majdhub Ghayr al-Salik in the villages of Jabal al-Alam proves that their outwardly tattered appearance and illogical behavior are, in truth, a highly structured system of signs charged with reality and metaphysical foresight. Among the most prominent manifestations of this profound attraction are:

  • Preemptive Disclosure and Immediate Warning: When a Majdhub stands in his tattered garb, bypassing everyone around him to approach a specific individual, warning them against a particular doorstep, sitting under a specific tree, or walking down a certain path, he speaks with a "vision" stripped of the barriers of time and space, seeing the causes of affliction before they materialize physically.
  • Symbolic Behavior and Spiritual Empowerment: Their requests and gifts are entirely devoid of material purpose. Giving a woman who longs for children an apple, or commanding her to tie his tattered cloak around her waist, instantly turns into an omen and a blessing that manifests in reality. Conversely, their anger—manifested when they point their staff like a rifle and utter the sound of breaking (Boom)—is immediately translated into a sharp spiritual force that turns the day of the mocker or scoffer into sudden affliction or misfortune. This compels the public to actively seek them out to appease their intense souls, which are directly connected to the unseen.

III. The Failure of Material Diagnosis: The Dilemma of Western Science and the Distinction Between Jadhb and Insanity

The intellectual value of the Jadhb phenomenon lies in the absolute inability of material methodologies and Western psychiatry to encompass it within a diagnosis. The Western approach categorizes any departure from ordinary reason under the umbrella of organic or psychological disorders (such as psychosis or schizophrenia). Yet, it stands helpless and bewildered before the supernatural occurrences (Khawariq) associated with the genuine Majdhub.

Here, the fundamental difference between the insane person and the Majdhub becomes clear:

  • The Insane Person: Their mind is lost, causing them to lose all discernment, producing illusions and delusions that carry no weight or reality.
  • The Majdhub: Their worldly mind is taken away and replaced with a sharp insight. They do not speak out of analysis or thought; rather, the absolute truth flows upon their tongue while they themselves remain unaware of the advice they dispense, hitting the target like a piercing arrow.

This esoteric secret is precisely what granted these Majaadhib an unwritten social and legal immunity. Even local security forces and gendarmerie—guided by their local cultural intuition—avoid clashing with these "people of the spiritual state" to prevent introducing chaos into their own personal lives, leaving them to roam freely among the people.

IV. Jealousy Over Sanctity and the Extension of Breaking the Norms

The state of the Majdhub is not limited to isolation; it can transform in moments of majestic wrath into a disciplinary force protecting sacred sites. Local memory documents instances where these individuals entered the sacred sanctuary of the mausoleum of Moulay Abd al-Salam bin Mashish, carrying their staffs to cleanse the space and expel the "clerics" who turned the Book of God into a means of commercial gain. This resulted in a collective flight of those clerics, who realized internally that the blows of the Majdhub were driven by an unyielding spiritual jealousy.

This grand cosmic asceticism and these supernatural feats are not confined to a single space. We find their dramatic extension in other Sufi orders in Morocco, such as the Aissaoua Order (attributed to the Perfect Sheikh in Meknes). In the height of the Hadra (the ecstatic gathering), the attraction transcends verbal signs to break the physical laws of the body. In moments of self-annihilation (Fana), they consume burning embers and glass, and handle venomous snakes voluntarily. This relies entirely on the concept of "reconciliation with the universe"—where the hostility of creatures dissolves before the purity of the inner self.

Conclusion

The phenomenon of the Majaadhib in Northern Morocco remains a reflective spiritual mirror. It reminds humanity, drowned in materialism, that this perceivable world is not everything, and that beyond the conventional mind lie worlds, secrets, and divine gifts that break ordinary norms and resist material explanation, forever preserved by the sanctity of the secret and the archiving of history.
