The Lion’s End: The Liquidation of Sharif Ahmed El Raisuni.. When Colonialism Assassinated a "State Project"
By: Jaafar El Lhioui (Northern Morocco Archive)
History is not always written by the victors; sometimes, it is written with the ink of "the unspoken," buried under the rubble of official narratives. Discussing the passing of Sharif Moulay Ahmed El Raisuni is not merely a chronicle of a man's end, but a revelation of a political and physical liquidation that targeted a comprehensive national (patriotic) project—one that aspired to full Moroccan sovereignty and never accepted the crumbs of "regional entities" or "mini-states."
1. The Man Who Wanted "The Whole":
Contrary to what some historians have promoted, El Raisuni was not a local rebel in the Jbala mountains; he carried the vision of a "Comprehensive State." He saw himself as the critical figure in the equation of Moroccan sovereignty, which made him an existential threat to colonial powers (France and Spain). The colonizers realized that El Raisuni could not be "domesticated," and that his ambition transcended the geographical boundaries they tried to confine him within.
2. Behind the Scenes of Liquidation: Poison, Prison, and Oblivion
Great figures in the history of global resistance, from William Wallace to Sharif Amzian, were immortalized by their heroic ends. El Raisuni, however, paid the price for his political cunning and his refusal of half-measures. Historical evidence and "behind-the-scenes" accounts indicate that his death was not a natural departure, but the result of a complex conspiracy:
- Imprisonment and Siege: He spent his final days in harsh conditions, far from his strongholds, weakening his body but never breaking his spirit.
- The Silent Assassination: Talks of "poisoning" remain the bitter truth that many tried to cover up, aiming to remove the man who blocked the paths of partition and containment.
3. Why Did Historians Obscure the Truth?
The neglect of the details surrounding El Raisuni's liquidation was a deliberate act to serve the "Single Hero" narrative that dominated the post-independence era. The goal was to bury the project of a strong, independent "Raisuni State" and replace it with narratives that served new political balances. The Sharif was killed twice: once when he was poisoned and imprisoned, and again when the details of his persecution were erased from official history books.
4. Closing Word: Loyalty to Memory
Through the "Taher El Lhioui Archive," we do not seek to mourn the past, but to reclaim the truth. El Raisuni, who died a captive and poisoned, remains a symbol in the Moroccan historical conscience of the man who refused to bow to colonial temptations or regional pressures. He knew that the price of "Full Patriotism" was death, and he met it with the loftiness of the greats.
